Brambles are regarded as one of the most critical plant groups particularly in the European flora. Due to their way of reproduction (see Facts about brambles) there are about 350 species in Central Europe and estimated 600 of them in Europe.
 
Since more than two decades Vechta is one of the Centers of Batology (bramble research) in Europe.
